People may ask them selfs, what is this? Well, Trisomy 18 is an Edwards syndrome, is a chromosomal condition that is associated with severe disabilities and some abnormalities in parts of the body. Babies that are born with this have many birth conditions. Many infants with this syndrome die within their first month. And only 10% of these babies live past their 1st birthday.This are some of the symptoms :
- Nervous system and brain- mental retardation & delayed development.
- High Muscle Tone
- Seizures
- Small head and face
- Heart defects
- Bones - clenches hands
- Malformations of the digistive tract
There are different types of Trisomy 18. For example, theres Full, Partial and Mosaic Trisomy 18. Full T-18 is the most common one, this is when the extra chromosome occurs in every cell of the baby's body. Partial, is when only a part of the extra chromosome is present. Mosaic is the most rare one, this is when the chromosome is only present in some of the cells. Neither Full or Mosaic are hereditary.
